Speakers

Eric A. Smith

Eric Smith is a Senior Advisor in the U.S. State Department’s Office of the Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technology. Prior to this he served as the Economic Unit Chief in Bern, Switzerland. Eric’s previous diplomatic assignments include macro finance analysis in Baghdad, a detail to the World Bank, the Foreign Service Institute’s Economic Studies course, chemical weapons nonproliferation based in the Netherlands, bilateral economic relations in Spain, visa adjudication in Pakistan, and commercial diplomacy in Hungary. Eric joined the U.S. Government as a Presidential Management Fellow. Prior to this, he worked in software marketing in his home state of California. Eric holds an MBA and MA in international relations and a BS in economics.

Ilan Manor

Ilan Manor (PhD Oxford University) is a digital diplomacy scholar at Ben Gurion University of the Negev and a member of Oxford University's Digital Diplomacy Research Group. Manor's 2024 co-edited book, The Oxford Digital Diplomacy Handbook, was published by Oxford University Press. His 2019 book, The Digitalization of Public Diplomacy, was published by Palgrave Macmillan. Manor has authored more than 20 academic papers exploring how innovative technologies are transforming the practices and institutions of diplomacy. His most recent work focuses on how Generative AI will impact international negotiations and crisis mediation.
