VPR Presents: The Coming Pandemic

Friday, January 19, 2007, 2:00pm
Monday, January 22, 2007, 9:00pm
A collaboration of VPR and the Vermont Council on World Affairs

VPR collaborates with the Vermont Council on World Affairs to present this panel discussion about how a flu pandemic will affect Vermont and the United States. We hear from Dr. Nils Daulaire, President and CEO of the Global Health Council; Vermont Department of Health Interim Commissioner Sharon Moffat and Dr. Christopher Grace, Director of the Infectious Disease Unit at Fletcher Allen Health Care. They reflect on pandemics of the past—such as the 1918 outbreak of Spanish flu that killed millions of people worldwide—and more recent threats such as SARS and Avian flu. You’ll learn about state-wide preparations being made in the event of an outbreak—and the steps you can take to help avoid contracting and spreading influenza.

The discussion was recorded November 2, 2006 at Ira Allen Chapel.

While pandemics are global in nature their effects are always felt locally.  Is the fear of a global avian flu pandemic based in fact?  Security and public health authorities are planning for epidemiological disasters as never before. What does that planning encompass, and how effective is it likely to be?  How are Vermont public health officials preparing?  What should Vermonters know to prepare themselves and their businesses?  The speakers will add their knowledge to this critical issue facing humanity.
