Spotlight on VCWA Summer Programs

The VCWA is proud to announce the implementation of two Iraqi Young Leadership Exchange Programs (IYLEP) in Vermont from July 11th – 23rd and July 28th - August 10th, 2023. These programs aim to develop leadership and civic engagement skills among participants, fostering respect for diversity and building mutual understanding between Iraq and the United States.

Each year, IYLEP focuses on different themes, and this year's program revolves around Diversity Rights and Inclusion. Through a series of workshops, site visits, and collaborations with local organizations, participants will gain valuable insights into advancing disability rights and promoting inclusivity.

The first IYLEP group, consisting of 11 participants, will be based in Northfield, VT. The group includes seven youth and one adult mentor from Iraq and three participants from the United States. They will have the opportunity to engage with various organizations and experts in the field, including the Vermont Center for Independent Living, HireAbility, MOSAIC, Vermont Adaptive, the Department of Health, Disability Rights Vermont, the Vermont Family Network, and the Howard Center.

The second IYLEP group, comprised of 14 participants, will be staying in St. Johnsbury, VT. Participants will also focus on disability rights and inclusivity as they interact with local organizations in Burlington and the Northeast Kingdom including St. Johnsbury Hub, St. Johnsbury Academy, and NECKA Youth Services. Additionally, they will volunteer at the Vermont Foodbank at the Intervale center and NH Adaptive, gaining hands-on experience for positive change. Cultural comparison and professional development will be emphasized as the group visits educational institutions such as Dartmouth College and the University of Vermont.

Program participants will stay in the homes of local Vermont residents who serve as hospitality hosts.
